While it serves high quality, homemade ice creams and desserts, what truly sets Comet Cones apart is its unique business model focused on teaching entrepreneurship, management, and marketing skills to local high school students.

At Comet Cones, local high school students manage the day-to-day activities. The owners oversee the students to train and mentor them, allowing the teens to gain real-life experience running and managing a small business while still in school. Younger students work in customer service, learning the basics of responsibility and gaining work experience. Upperclassmen are responsible for managing their peers and assuring that the shop runs smoothly.
In addition to daily work tasks, students actively participate in the marketing efforts of the business. Students are responsible for managing the shop’s social media profiles and posting on a daily basis.
The name “Comet Cones” comes from the mascot of the local high school. The school is a huge part of this community, where families often have several generations of graduates. In creating the logo for Comet Cones, we wanted to draw on this school pride.
While creating concepts for this logo design, we explored two main icons – a comet and an ice cream cone. To tie the two ideas together, we used the ice cream cone as the comet’s center. This resulted in a simple but clever logo design. While we also explored type-based options, we eliminated those in favor of the bold and familiar comet.
For the final logo design, we chose an ice cream cone surrounded by the flame of the comet. We then paired this with two clean, simple typefaces. The color palette relies on the scarlet and gray colors used by the high school, so it looks familiar to customers. While many ice cream shops use pastel colors and retro graphics, we chose to go with a more modern look. This helps Comet Cones to stand out from its competition.
The branding is intentionally simple – giving the students freedom to explore a variety of design styles as they learn the basics behind design and marketing.
